5 Day Sahara Sands & Atlas Mountains Loop from Casablanca

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1 — Casablanca › Marrakech › High Atlas › Aït Ben Haddou › Ouarzazate

Depart Casablanca early and drive to Marrakech for a brief stop at the iconic Jemaa el-Fna square — a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage site where the world’s most extraordinary street theatre unfolds daily. Continue south through the dramatic Tizi n’Tichka pass in the High Atlas at 2,260 metres, Morocco’s highest paved mountain road. Descend into the arid pre-Saharan landscape to visit the magnificent Ksar of Aït Ben Haddou, the UNESCO-listed earthen fortress whose towers have appeared in Gladiator, Lawrence of Arabia, and Game of Thrones. Arrive in Ouarzazate for dinner and overnight at a hotel.

Day 2 — Ouarzazate › Skoura › Dadès Valley › Todgha Gorge › Merzouga

After breakfast and a brief visit to Atlas Studios and the historic Kasbah Taourirt in Ouarzazate, the route leads east through the stunning Skoura palm grove — a vast oasis of date palms threaded with ancient irrigation channels and dotted with crumbling kasbahs — before passing through Boumalne Dadès. A short detour brings you into the magnificent Todgha Gorge, where a walk between 300-metre limestone walls and the cold, clear Todgha River is one of the defining experiences of southern Morocco. Continue east to Merzouga for dinner and overnight.

Day 3 — Erg Chebbi Desert Full Day

A day entirely devoted to the Sahara. Morning exploration by 4×4: the Gnawa music village of Khamlia, a nomadic family encampment still living by ancient desert traditions, and the vast open dune sea. Sandboarding optional on the tallest dunes. Late afternoon, a camel caravan carries you deep into the Erg Chebbi dunes for a sunset that turns the sand every shade of gold and crimson. A Berber camp dinner of lamb tagine, traditional drumming, and the infinite Saharan night sky await. Overnight in a private desert tent.

Day 4 — Merzouga › Midelt › Ifrane › Fez

Rise for the desert sunrise, then head north through the rocky Tafilalet basin and the dramatic Ziz Valley palm corridor. Lunch in Midelt. The road climbs back into the Middle Atlas, passing through the cedar forests of Azrou where wild Barbary macaques scramble through the branches, and the alpine resort town of Ifrane — Morocco’s cleanest city, built in the French colonial style and surrounded by oak and cedar forests. Arrive in Fez for dinner and overnight in a riad.

Day 5 — Fez Medina › Rabat › Casablanca

A focused morning in Fez el-Bali: the tanneries, the Bou Inania Madrasa, and the souk quarter are the essential stops. Then drive west to Rabat — Morocco’s elegant modern capital — for a rapid highlights visit: the Hassan Tower, the Kasbah of the Udayas with its blue-and-white Andalusian quarter, and the Chellah necropolis with its ruined Roman city overgrown with figs and bougainvillea. Final drive to Casablanca, arriving by evening with drop-off at airport or hotel.
