Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1 — Fez › Ifrane › Azrou › Midelt › Merzouga

Your driver picks you up from your Fez hotel at sunrise. The road south passes through Ifrane, a planned resort town built during the French protectorate to resemble an Alpine village, complete with chalet-style architecture and a cool climate perfect for skiing in winter. A short stop in the cedar groves of Azrou gives you the chance to watch Barbary macaques — the only wild primate found in North Africa — as they forage through the branches. Lunch is in Midelt, a town famous for its mineral markets, where local vendors display amethysts, fossils, and polished geodes. The afternoon drive descends through the Tafilalet region — historically one of Morocco’s most important caravan crossroads — before arriving in Merzouga. Dinner and your first night at a traditional desert kasbah.

Day 2 — Erg Chebbi Desert Full Day: Khamlia, Nomads, Jeep Tour, Camel Trek & Camp

A full day devoted to the desert experience. After breakfast, your 4×4 jeep heads into the dunes for an immersive exploration. The first stop is Khamlia, a remote village renowned as a stronghold of Gnawa music — a hypnotic, trance-inducing tradition rooted in Sub-Saharan African culture. Local musicians perform in a shaded courtyard, and you can watch artisans weave intricate textiles in small workshops beside the palms.

Next, your jeep ventures deeper into the desert to visit a family of Saharan nomads who maintain an ancient seasonal lifestyle, raising goats and camels without connection to any electricity grid. The afternoon is yours to try sandboarding on the tallest dunes before mounting camels for the golden-hour ride to your Berber camp. The evening brings a communal tagine dinner, drumming, and one of the most extraordinary star-filled skies you will ever witness. Overnight in the camp.

Day 3 — Merzouga › Tinghir › Todgha Gorge › Boumalne Dadès

Watch the Saharan sunrise from the dune crests, then return to the lodge for breakfast. The route heads northwest to Tinghir, a lush oasis town threaded with palm groves and ancient kasbahs rising above the Todgha River. A walk along the riverbed leads you into the Todgha Gorge — a jaw-dropping natural corridor where sheer cliffs tower 300 metres overhead and a cool stream flows at your feet. Rock climbers dangle from the walls, and small cafés serve mint tea in the shade. Continuing west through the Valley of Roses and the rolling curves of the Dadès Valley, you arrive in Boumalne Dadès for the evening. Dinner and overnight in a hotel with red-rock views.

Day 4 — Dadès › Ouarzazate › Aït Ben Haddou › Marrakech

After breakfast you head for Ouarzazate, the self-styled “gateway to the Sahara” and Morocco’s answer to Hollywood. A stroll through the Atlas Studios — where sets from blockbusters including Gladiator, Lawrence of Arabia, and Babel still stand — and the adjacent Kasbah Taourirt offers a fascinating window into Moroccan film heritage. A short drive brings you to Aït Ben Haddou, the UNESCO-listed ksar whose honey-coloured towers reflected in the river have featured in dozens of international productions. Your heritage guide explains the intricate earthen architecture before you scale to the summit granary for sweeping panoramic views. From here, the spectacular Tizi n’Tichka pass carries you up through the High Atlas to 2,260 metres — the highest paved road in Morocco — before dropping into the Haouz plain. Arrival in Marrakech by evening.
