9 Day Wonders of Morocco Loop from Casablanca

Overview

Nine days in a circular loop from Casablanca — returning to your starting airport without repeating a single road. This private tour covers all of Morocco’s must-see destinations in a logical, anti-clockwise arc: north to Rabat and Chefchaouen, east to Fez, south to the Sahara, west through the kasbah valleys to Marrakech and Essaouira, and north again along the Atlantic coast to Casablanca. Two nights in the Sahara give you a full desert experience; two nights in Fez allow an unhurried medina immersion; and the Chefchaouen add-on brings Morocco’s most photogenic city into the route.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1 — Casablanca › Hassan II Mosque › Rabat › Chefchaouen

Depart Casablanca with a brief stop at the Hassan II Mosque for an exterior visit and photos on the oceanfront terrace. Drive 45 minutes north to Rabat for the highlight monuments: the incomplete Hassan Tower minaret (44 m of a planned 86 m) and the adjacent Mausoleum of Mohammed V — Morocco’s most revered royal tomb, guarded by mounted royal guards in ceremonial dress. Cross the Bou Regreg River to explore the Kasbah of the Udayas — a walled Almohad citadel of blue-and-white painted houses, a Moorish garden, and a café terrace overlooking the Atlantic. Continue north toward the Rif Mountains, arriving in Chefchaouen by afternoon. Guided walk through the blue alleyways of the medina, the main Plaza Uta el-Hammam, and the 15th-century kasbah with its small ethnographic museum. Overnight in a riad in the medina.

Day 2 — Chefchaouen › Volubilis › Meknès › Fez

A morning guided walk takes in the Chouara quarter dyers hanging freshly dyed wool, the Ras el-Maa waterfall where mountain water cascades past women washing textiles, and the hilltop Spanish Mosque viewpoint with its panoramic views over the blue rooftops. Depart for Volubilis via Ouezzane, a hilltop spiritual centre and olive-oil town. The Roman ruins at Volubilis — founded in the 3rd century BC, capital of the Kingdom of Mauretania — feature a triumphal arch, the foundations of a grand Basilica, the intact floors of the House of Orpheus mosaic, and the extraordinary Procession of Venus mosaic depicting the goddess pulled by dolphins. Stop briefly at the pilgrimage town of Moulay Idriss Zerhoun, built dramatically across two rocky hillsides, before arriving in Fez for dinner. Overnight in riad.

Day 3 — Fez El-Bali: Morning Medina Deep-Dive

Your expert local guide leads you from the Bab Bou Jeloud (the Blue Gate) deep into the Fez medina. Morning highlights: the leather Chouara Tanneries viewed from the fragrant mint-sprig balconies above, the carved stucco galleries of the Bou Inania Madrasa, the sacred quarter around al-Qarawiyyin Mosque and University (founded 859 CE), the clanging copper-smiths’ souk, and the spice and herbal medicine quarter. Afternoon: the Nejjarine Fountain and Fondouk — a restored 18th-century caravanserai now housing a woodworking museum — the Jewish Mellah quarter with its working synagogue, and the Fez Pottery Cooperative, where traditional Fassi blue-and-white ceramics are hand-painted using century-old geometric patterns. Overnight Fez riad.

Day 4 — Fez › Ifrane › Azrou › Midelt › Merzouga

Head south through the Middle Atlas: Ifrane‘s European-style chalets and clean mountain parks, then the cedar groves of Azrou where Barbary macaques — North Africa’s only wild primates — forage through ancient trees and accept pine nuts from respectful visitors. Lunch in Midelt, known for its apple orchards and fossil market. Descend through the spectacular Ziz Gorge and the vast palm-lined Ziz Valley oasis to Erfoud, then continue to Merzouga. Overnight at desert lodge.

Day 5 — Erg Chebbi Full Desert Day › Camp Overnight

A full immersion day: 4×4 tour of the dune perimeter, visiting the Gnawa music village of Khamlia, a working nomadic family camp in the open desert, and a salt lake that hosts flamingos during rainy winters. Afternoon sandboarding on the high dunes, then the golden-hour camel caravan to your luxury Berber camp. Dinner of tajine and harira, drumming and singing around the campfire, and the incomparable Saharan night sky. Overnight in camp.

Day 6 — Desert Sunrise › Rissani › Todgha Gorge › Dadès Valley › Ouarzazate

Pre-dawn dune climb for the Saharan sunrise. After breakfast, visit the historic weekly market of Rissani, birthplace of the Alaouite dynasty, where traders gather beneath palm-thatch awnings to sell livestock, pottery, and woven textiles. Drive through Tinghir oasis to the Todgha Gorge for a canyon walk between vertical limestone walls. Afternoon through the Valley of Roses (Kalaat M’Gouna) and the Skoura palm grove to Ouarzazate. Overnight in Ouarzazate.

Day 7 — Aït Ben Haddou › Tizi n’Tichka › Marrakech

Morning visit to the Atlas Studios (sets from Gladiator, Alexander, and The Mummy still standing) and the Kasbah Taourirt. Drive to the UNESCO-listed Ksar of Aït Ben Haddou: your heritage guide explains the seven-century history of this Drâa river crossing fortification, the architectural genius of its pisé construction, and the four families still residing within its walls. Climb to the hilltop granary for the iconic panoramic view. Cross the Tizi n’Tichka pass (2,260 m) through the High Atlas. Arrival in Marrakech by evening. Overnight in riad.

Day 8 — Marrakech Full Guided Day

A licensed Marrakchi guide devotes the morning to the medina’s landmark monuments: the Koutoubia Mosque minaret, the Bahia Palace with its 160 ornately decorated rooms and courtyard garden, and the Saadian Tombs — sealed for two centuries by the Alaouite dynasty and rediscovered in 1917. Afternoon: the famous themed souk quarters (leather babouche, cedar woodwork, hammered copper, natural dyes), and the electric-blue Majorelle Garden with its Berber culture museum (formerly Yves Saint Laurent’s private garden). Evening free in the legendary Jemaa el-Fna square — watch the acrobats, fortune-tellers, and Gnawa musicians as the plaza transforms into one of the world’s great nocturnal spectacles. Overnight Marrakech.

Day 9 — Marrakech › Essaouira › Casablanca

Morning drive west through argan forest to the Atlantic port city of Essaouira — a UNESCO World Heritage medina of whitewashed walls, blue fishing boats, and constant Atlantic winds. Walk the 18th-century ramparts above the crashing surf, browse the fishing harbour where blue-hulled boats unload fresh catch at dawn, and visit an argan oil cooperative where women crack shells and grind kernels by hand. Essaouira’s vibrant gallery quarter and music scene (it was Jimi Hendrix’s favourite Moroccan town) make it one of Morocco’s most charming stops. Continue north along the Atlantic coast via El Jadida (optional stop at the extraordinary Portuguese underground cistern) to Casablanca for airport drop-off or city hotel delivery.
