Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1 — Fez › Midelt › Erg Chebbi, Merzouga
Departing Fez in the early morning, you head south through the Middle Atlas Mountains. The road climbs past the tidy European-style villas of Ifrane before entering the dense cedar forests around Azrou, where wild Barbary macaques often scramble down to the roadside. Continuing over the Zad mountain pass, the terrain gradually transforms from green forest to arid plateau. Lunch is in Midelt, a market town renowned for its semi-precious minerals and apple orchards. After lunch you descend through the stunning Ziz Valley — a corridor of thousands of date palms — before the red dunes of Erg Chebbi appear on the horizon. You arrive in Merzouga by late afternoon. Your camel handler leads you into the dunes to watch the sunset, and your evening is spent at a Berber camp: dinner under the stars, rhythmic drum music, and a sky unpolluted by city light.
Day 2 — Merzouga › Todgha Gorge › Boumalne Dadès
An early wake-up rewards you with the magical spectacle of a desert sunrise before returning to the lodge for breakfast. The day’s route heads west toward the Todgha Gorge, where the Todgha River has carved a cathedral-like canyon through 300-metre limestone cliffs. A short walk along the riverbed reveals dramatic overhanging walls and small Berber villages perched above. Continuing westward, you pass through a series of picturesque valley villages before arriving in Boumalne Dadès, framed by extraordinary red-rock formations and the sweeping arc of the Dadès Valley. Dinner and overnight in a comfortable hotel or riad.
Day 3 — Boumalne Dadès › Aït Ben Haddou › Marrakech
After breakfast, the journey continues through the fragrant Valley of Roses, where petals destined for the world’s finest perfumeries are harvested each spring. Your next landmark is the magnificent Kasbah of Aït Ben Haddou — a UNESCO World Heritage Site whose earth-toned towers have served as a backdrop in productions from Gladiator to Game of Thrones. After exploring its labyrinthine alleys and admiring panoramic views from the hilltop granary, you tackle the serpentine Tizi n’Tichka pass through the High Atlas. Snow-capped peaks give way to argan forests and the red rooftops of Marrakech. You are dropped at your accommodation as the city’s souks fill with the sounds of evening.
